The ruling class of politicans, of both parties in Washington, D.C., have made our country very ill economically. They come up with schemes such as global warming in order to bring about regulation and taxes - the old "spreading the wealth around" scheme. Or make up a crisis in order to take over a car company so they can pay off the unions. We are partly to blame for this, not keeping an eye on our politicians, thinking every entity exists to make our lives easier by expecting them to pay for things for us, i.e. insurance companies, social security, medicare/medicaid, welfare. Things are going to drastically change for all of us, and maybe very quickly. It seems to me most times these changes happen based on a mere opinion, that starts a cascade of consequences. But then, if we are strong in the core of our beings, if our values are built on Rock and not Sand, we can weather these changes, and help others in the process. May we make sure we build our lives on the Rock of God, His Son Jesus, the Redeeming sacrifice that Jesus made for us, the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, and the Truth that is God's Word - the Bible.

The Peace Symbol

It's Halloween, and I've been researching symbols to carve in my pumpkins. I purchased 4 small pumpkins, being everything else was gone at the grocery yesterday. What to carve???? I've carved a cross into at least one each year, redeeming the meaning of Halloween a bit. I've read that the history of children dressing up as ghouls, and trick-or-treating goes way back several centuries. In doing so, these children were actually mocking satan with the truth that he was defeated at the Cross by Jesus death, and His Resurrection! I like that! So, this year since the pumpkins are so small, I'm going to carve the Cross in one, and the symbols for Love-heart, joy-a smiley face, and peace, you know, the first three "fruits of the Spirit". But, I didn't know what symbol to use. In my research, I came across this online-http://www.teachpeace.com/peacesymbolhistory.htm.
So, after reading this, if you're a Christian, you might want to think twice about letting little ones wear clothes with the peace symbol on them, especially since the symbol is everywhere these days.

If you're like me, I was raised to believe that the story spoke to how I was to treat others. Stoopid Me!! (slap up side the head) It's NOT about ME - it's ABOUT JESUS!! HE IS THE GOOD SAMARITAN, BUT MORE!! I am the one, lying on the side of the road, beaten-bleeding-without hope because of my sin. Jesus came, picked me up, tended my wounds, paid for my needs. So, today I was going to look up the mayo clinic website, and I typed in what I thought was the website name in the internet search box. (I'm enjoying BING - such pretty pictures!) Uhmmm www.mayo.com didnt't take me to the clinic. Instead, up popped a really big word on a blue background, that at first looked like a curse word! Then I realized it was the HELLMAN'S mayonnaise website! Good stuff, mayo that is, especially used on white bread with fried bacon and lettuce! I leave out the T of the BLT. Never liked tomatoes, never will. But, I will always like and enjoy mayo and bacon! What about you? Good night and have a great Monday morning!

I have just spent a few hours perusing this site, watching the videos. What a wonderful antedote to the Jim Wallis brand of social justice that grants government - both state and federal, but mostly federal - intrusion into the civil life of Americans, redistributing our resources through the continuing escalation of taxation and burdensome regulations. I found direction in Leviticus 19:9-10 - - "When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the Lord your God." Notice that it doesn't say "Give a portion to your government to use as it pleases, then let the government hand over some to poor people." I believe these verses show the dignity of God expressed in people, the value of work to that dignity. These verses show that the poor get to work for their needed goods. In Leviticus19:15 - "Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly." I believe the welfare system has not only destroyed generations of families, but goes against scripture by showing partiality to the poor. The government took the right and responsibility of caring from the poor from the church by creating dependency-subsidies funded through taxation. The video on the value of work as it relates to the dignity of men, and how government welfare strips men of their dignity, therefore rendering them ineffective in their families and communities, is powerful. Actually all of this is valuable. It is in a dvd/study format for churches and groups, and individuals.

I have always enjoyed looking at houses, both the exteriors and interiors. I've been drawn by them since I was a little girl. I remember as a little girl, while making the one-of-many 45 minute drives from our southeast Tennessee home to my mamaw's Chicamauga, GA house in the country, observing certain house on the ride. Always, I admired, critiqued, enjoyed houses and their land. Through the years, I've tried to come up with a balanced philosophy of interior design/landscaping interests that could co-exist with my worldview as a follower of Jesus Christ. The best thing I've been able to come up with is these interests should exist as an expression of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit's character. How does He reveal Himself through the disciplines of architecture, function, design, plants, trees, and water? One thought is there are infinite ways lines, color, light, plants, bricks, wood, stone can be combined to express a small picture of beauty, and therefore the infinite beauty of God, the Creator of all these things. The trouble comes, being that this is a fallen world and we are fallen people, we worship the creation, instead of the Creator. Another thought is hospitality, and how we can use our homes to serve our families and others. Dear Diary:

May 30th: Just moved to Fort Worth, Texas from up North. Now this is a city that knows how to live!! What a place! Watched the sunset from a park lying on a blanket. It was beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.
June 14th: Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun every day like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper.
June 30th: Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here!
July 10th: The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat and humidity is taking longer than I expected.
July 15th: Fell asleep by the pool. (Got 3rd degree burns over 60 % of my body). Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.
July 20th: I missed Morgan (our cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car for lunch, Morgan had died and was swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stank up the $2,000 leather upholstery. I told the kids that she ran away. The car now smells like Kibbles and shits. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat.
July 25th: The wind sucks. It feels like a giant blow dryer!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairmen charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts.
July 30th: Been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights in a row. $1,500 in house payments and we can't even go inside. Why did I come here?
August 4th: It's 105 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85, but this humidity makes the house feel like it's about 95. Stupid repairman peed in my pool. I hate this stupid city.
August 8th: If another wise ass cracks "Hot enough for you today?" I'm going to strangle him. Dang heat. By the time I get to work the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!
August 9th: Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts and sat on the black leather seats in the car. I thought my ass was on fire. I lost two layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass. Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat.
August 10th: The weather report might as well be a recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do anything for 2 months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this desert?? Water rationing will be next, so might as well watch $1,700 worth of cactus just dry up and blow into the pool. Even the cactus can't live in this heat.
August 15th: Welcome to HELL!! Temperature got to 105 today. Forgot to crack the window and blew the windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and said, "Hot enough for you today?" My wife had to spend the $1,500 house payment to bail me out of jail.
Dang south. What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here??

DAY 100 - We're Still ALIVE!

We have survived 100 days, or so, driving our Toyota Rav 4. Actually, it's my husband's car. Just to be sure, we are updating all life-disability-long term care insurance. I never thought to be afraid of the Rav 4, until Henry Waxman and the media put the thought into my head. Now, I just don't know if I can trust the Rav. The other night, looking out the kitchen window, the full moon was shining off Rav's black, sleek body - it is a cutie, I mean sharp-looking car! (Sorry honey, I know you want it to be a 'manly car', checking traffic to see how many men drove Rav 4s before you bought Rav. We sure miss our '70 Mustang with the 350 cleveland and the '68 Chevelle, don't we?) Was that the sound of something happening on the floorboard that I heard, or the wind? It sounded almost like, maybe, the mat scooting over, or maybe the gas pedal moving. We have: bought a 2002 Toyota Corrolla in the fall of 2001. Never had a problem.
We recently bought: 2009 Toyota Rav 4, paid cash for it after saving for several years (thanks Dave Ramsey!). We are not scared of our car, for what it's worth. What Congress is doing this week to Toyota is despicable, IMHO. When the news started breaking a few weeks ago about Toyota's problems, I thought, "Oh well, a recall is coming, glad they're taking care of the problem." Then I started noticing the main stream media making a big deal out of it. I wondered if something was going on. Yep, the government coming after a non-union company to punish it! Chicken n' Dumplins

I made them for dinner last night. I've never made them before, glad I did! Boiled the hen, hubby picked her bones clean, made the dumplins from scratch, the Syd helped me drop them in the bubbly delicious broth made with the cooking of the hen, added the meat, cooked some more, then mmm.....delicious! Great for a cold, rainy night! Looking forward to the leftovers tonight! You can go to http://www.myrecipes.com and type in "chicken and dumplings" for the recipe I used. There are alot out there! Great comfort dish! Inexpensive too! BTW, I recently made some very tasty chicken broth for chicken noodle soup, using a store-bought deli-roasted chicken to save time. I pulled the meat for the soup, then I put the carcass in my big dutch oven, added a bunch of cans of vegetable broth I needed to clear out of the pantry, added a turnip, some onion, freshly ground pepper and sea salt, the simmered about an hour, strained out the solids. Great broth! Another tip: I admit I don't like the little pieces of fat and that line of cartiledge in chicken breasts, so I trim them off. When we had a dog, I'd boil those pieces for her (RIP Tess). Now, I just toss them in a plastic bag, seal and put them in the freezer until garbage day. That way, no smelly raw meats in the garbage can - especially in the summer!

During conversation over lunch after church at Potbelly's, we friends made our way to the topic of music! The topic roamed from the band MUSE, vintage Hammond organs (which launched my husband's music direction when he was a teenager) and the one my husband's mom still has, to someone doing a cover of the Doors "Light My Fire". I happened to mention to the young people there about Jose Feliciano's cover of this song. Loved, loved, loved this as a teenager in the '70's! Well, here it is - I hope you enjoy it!

God is good. Sometimes it takes inconvience, pain, and even tragedy to allow Him to display His grace and goodness. And He is so generous to allow us as humans to cooperate with Him in His goodness! Hurricane Ike, like other natural disasters, brought the range of life experience from inconvience to tragedy. People died in Hurricane Ike, were washed away by the storm surge on Boliver Island. Others, like our family, just lost some shingles with some resulting wall and floor damamge. But, what has happened for one very deserving family in Kemah, Texas is awesome! They will be on ABC's Extreme Makeover Home Edition in March! Check out their story here: http://blushieldsextreme.com.
Now, about the situation in Haiti: I would like to encourage any reader (all 3 of you!) who wants to support outreach to Haiti to prayerfully consider Living water - www.water.cc. My husband and I know these people, this organiztion well. They have been digging water wells around the world, with the cooperation with churchs, groups, and individuals for years. They are who they say they are, run a reputable, honest organization. Check them out! Our little church set a goal of $10,000 dollars for a Christmas offering to Living water to dig two water wells this summer. Our church will send a group to help dig one in Guatamala this summer. We raised almost that amount...just $1000.00 dollars short - can I hear an AMEN?! I bet we'll finish that goal soon!
So, in closing this post, let me encourage you to view your home with Thanksgiving to God that He so graciously provides a place to lay our heads, to express our creativeness that expresses His creativeness, to extend hospitality to others, to serve our families and neighbors. As dark as it seems for Haiti right now, there is much Light there...God is there in the presence of those who know Him and are serving Him by rescuing others! The Lord has shown His light through Extreme Home Makeover and through such a giving family as the Beach family in Kemah Texas. He is the Light, His Word is a lamp onto our feet, and "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds, and praise your Father in heaven."
